The Gornal Pig
by
Laurence Fletcher
(To the tune of Darlin’ Corey as sung by Pete Seeger).
Inspired by our Pig Legend articles.
Ever since I got to Gornal.
There was one thing I wanted to know.
Who put the pig on the stone wall
And why did he treat it so?
This is the Gornal story,
That left me wonderin’ why…
A man put his pig on the front wall,
To watch the parade go by.
Was that man mistaken,
Did he think it was one of his kids?
Were their kids so ugly?
Or was it wearin’ a wig?
Was the story insultin’,
To the average Gornal wife?
To say her house was dirty,
Any woman would take your life!
The truth is back in Hist’ry
There’s a picture on an old post card.
A parade and a Dawley farmer,
And a porker in his old back- yard.
A comic living in Gornal,
Stuck some paper on and made it a joke,
About his mates at the local,
And Johnny a tall thin bloke.
He was a local grocer,
Who liked more than a pint or two,
How he got home after drinkin’
Well, only the carthorse knew!
So if you go to Gornal,
And go lookin’ for the “Pig on the Wall”
Now they’ve knocked the pub down.
And there wasn’t any pig at all!
