Taxi Building tittle tattle not true
Before Christmas we reported that the long running saga of the derelict council-owned
taxi building was finally coming to a conclusion; a demolition
planning notice had been posted on the door, and officials evisaged that the work would be carried out in January.
Unfortunately this has not taken place, although there does appear to have been some peripheral activity on site. The
Area Committee meeting next Monday will be an opportunity to establish the current
status.
Earlier this week we were contacted by concerned readers, who had heard a rumour that the demolition was not going to happen
because the house was being converted into flats for asylum seekers. By yesterday afternoon the story had spread
throughout Gornal, from Himley Road to Clarence Street.
We got in touch with senior Council officer Duncan Lowndes, Assistant Director of Culture and Community Services,
who has told us that this rumour is unfounded.
Mr. Lowndes stated:
"The tenders for the demolition works etc. were due back on the 7th February. I can confirm that I will be in a position
at the meeting on Monday evening to provide details as to where we are in terms of the receipt of tenders
and the timescale for undertaking the work alongside, quashing the rumours regarding the conversion into flats etc."
