St. Peters Graveyard Criticised

photo We have recently received disturbing accounts of the current state of the burial ground at St. Peters Church in Upper Gornal.

A lady who had visited the Gornal area to see the churches where her relatives were buried was so distressed that she took these photographs, and writes:

"The graveyard is downright dangerous now in parts. I had my friend and her 11 year old daughter with me and at one point we had taken two different paths. She stopped dead when she spotted the top of a Celtic cross sticking out of the grass, and realized that the land had gone down a level, making it impossible to even see tall graves, let alone the flat ones."

photo "Meanwhile, I was within a couple of yards of her, photographing a couple of stones. I couldn't see where I was walking, when suddenly my foot stepped onto very soggy plywood. I realized that this was covering a grave!"

Another Yampy correspondent, ex-Gornalite Ian from Australia, told us:

"I was quite disgusted with the state of the churchyard as it's my family church - where my Grandparents are buried and where both myself and my parents were married. The church should be ashamed and must do something about it."

photo Ian continued:

"Surely there is a legal obligation to ensure that the area is safe for public access? If someone is hurt in the graveyard the first thing they're going to do is sue the Church."

If any other readers have views on this matter, or if you represent the Church and wish to make a case in defence of it, please email us at admin@yampy.co.uk
