St. Peters Graveyard Criticised
We have recently received disturbing accounts of the current state of the burial ground at
St. Peters Church in Upper Gornal.
A lady who had visited the Gornal area to see the churches where her relatives were buried was so
distressed that she took these photographs, and writes:
"The graveyard is downright dangerous now in parts. I had my friend and
her 11 year old daughter with me and at one point we had taken two
different paths. She stopped dead when she spotted the top of a Celtic
cross sticking out of the grass, and realized that the land had gone
down a level, making it impossible to even see tall graves, let alone
the flat ones."
"Meanwhile, I was within a couple of yards of her,
photographing a couple of stones. I couldn't see where I was walking,
when suddenly my foot stepped onto very soggy plywood. I realized that
this was covering a grave!"
Another Yampy correspondent, ex-Gornalite Ian from Australia, told us:
"I was quite disgusted with the state of the churchyard as it's my family church -
where my Grandparents are buried and where both myself and my parents were
married. The church should be ashamed and must do something about it."
Ian continued:
"Surely there is a legal obligation to ensure that the area is safe for public
access? If someone is hurt in the graveyard the first thing they're going to do
is sue the Church."
