Sedgley ATC at work and play

A Gornal based Air Training Corps squadron took on a marathon task recently - by helping to marshall around 2000 competitors at the 2003 Wolverhampton Marathon.

On the 7th September 2003 fifteen cadets of 2132 (Sedgley) Squadron ATC, together with six members of staff and Civilian Committee, turned out on a warm and sunny Sunday, despite the gloomy weather forecast.

Meeting at Squadron HQ at Roford Court at 7.30am, the cadets descended on West Park in a fleet of cars, arriving at the arranged time of 08.00 hrs for a re-brief and allocation of duties at the various stations. The race commenced at 09.20 for the cyclists and at 09.30 for the runners.

A long but enjoyable day ended with a feeling of a job well done, by helping in a very worthwhile event. Organisers made a donation to the Squadron funds which will as always be used to help fund cadet projects at the Squadron.

Not that it's all hard graft in the ATC - recently the squadron organised a canal boat cruise for 30 people; staff, Civilian Committee, Cadets, Dudley RAFA, and a number of Upper Gornal pensioners, with the participation of local Councillor David Stanley.

The canal narrow-boat (owned by Pablo Mason - an ex Tornado fighter pilot from Gulf War One) left Oxley Marina at 12 noon and cruised to Coven, with a fish & chip lunch on the way.

At Coven there was an hour stopover for liquid refreshment at the Fox & Anchor waterside pub. The leisurely return cruise to Oxley Marina took just over an hour.

All participants had a thoroughly good time and thanks have to go to Lucy Kanas for organising such a pleasant outing.
