Black Country Pop Idol hopeful Mark Rhodes breezed through to the last ten on Saturday evening, with a consummate rendition of the Dirty Dancing ballad She's Like The Wind that stood head and shoulders above the competition.

Mark impressed all the judges, who unanimously and correctly predicted that he would finish in the top two artists heading for the grand final - despite Simon Cowell's disparaging remarks about lack of charisma (pot? kettle?), which is of course media-speak for 'has a Black Country accent'.

Our only concern was when rival Glen, who appeals perhaps to the same markets as Mark, was inexplicably praised to the rooftops by all of the panel, for a pretty hum-drum version of A Million Love Songs.

Fortunately, the public was as unconvinced as Yampy, and Glen finished out of the running - although he was later reprieved by a bizarre and unfair repercharge, cooked up by the show to ensure that the judges' pet favourites get another chance.

Mark appeared on GMTV this morning with Eamonn and Fiona - a sure sign that he has 'arrived'. Congratulations to him and all his family, and best of luck for the Final.
