Gornal Fun Day set for 28th June 2003

Last night the first Committee meeting was held to begin planning for this summer's Gornal Fun Day.

The decision to make the carnival an annual event follows the huge success of last year's 'one off' to celebrate the Golden Jubilee (click here for report), when the sun shone on a great afternoon out at the Quarry Recreation Grounds in Vale Street.

Memories of that scorching day seemed distant yesterday evening when, in bitter cold and drifting snow, around twenty local community representatives gathered at the Upper Gornal Pensioner's Club in Kent Street to set the wheels in motion for a bigger and even better Fun Day this year.

Among those present were all three Gornal Councillors, Judith Bennett of The Oval PNI, Beth Moore from Noise: Creative Family Learning, Barry Whitehouse from the BCHA, Christine Gibbons and Jim Plumb from the Upper Gornal Voluntary Recreation Association, and several members of Sedgley 21/32 ATC

Chair and Vice Chair of the Committee are Ted Kanas and Andy Bill of the ATC. Ted opened the meeting by explaining the aims of the Fun Day; to unite the Gornal community, have fun together, and raise funds for good causes. A discussion followed on the details of event planning and proposed attractions. It is hoped that the Old Mill will again be open to the public. This was a great success last year; many people who have lived in Gornal all of their lives have never been up to the top of the Mill. The view on a clear day is absolutely spectacular in all directions.

Although the Fun Day will take place in Upper Gornal due to the space requirements, it was stressed last night that the event belonged to everyone in the community, and a Publicity sub-committee has been formed to ensure that all Gornal people have the opportunity to take part.

If you have any ideas or comments about the Fun Day, or suggestions for areas of improvement on last year's effort, please email us at funday@yampy.co.uk and we will ensure that the message reaches the relevant committee member.

The next full committee meeting will be in March. If you wish to play an active part, why not email the Chair at tedkanas@lycos.co.uk or telephone Christine Gibbons on 01902 678498?
