Express and Star 'strongly dispute' Yampy complaint

(update 14/7/03 - the removed article has now been reinstated following legal advice)

Yesterday we published an article in which we explained that the Express and Star had downloaded images from our site and used accompanying text to create an item in their newspaper, without contacting us or crediting www.yampy.co.uk in the report. This came to light when Barry Clarke, who sent us the images for publication, contacted us to find out what was going on. The text surrounding the photographs was made up of submissions from various Yampy readers who gradually helped us to name some of the characters pictured.

This morning we sent an email to Deputy Editor Keith Harrison in which we suggested that a payment, credit, and apology should be forthcoming. Here is his reply:

Dear Mr Reeves,

We strongly dispute the contents of your email and the article which is currently posted on your website. These allegations are clearly defamatory to both the individuals involved and the Express & Star as a publication. I would be grateful if you could supply me with a verbatim shorthand note and/or a verified tape recording of your conversations with our staff to substantiate your claims as soon as possible. This will allow me to take this matter further with our solicitors.

Keith Harrison Deputy Editor

We have removed the article until we have established from Mr. Harrison what exactly he believes is the defamation (note 14/7/03 we have now reinstated this story click here). .

It looks like an apology from them may be some way off.
