Councillor Caunt's Daring Delph Descent

Local Gornal politician and Leader of Dudley Council David Caunt will be rallying his crew for a unique narrow boat challenge this coming Saturday, 11th October at 10am, as he attempts to descend the famous Delph nine locks in Brierley Hill in under 50 minutes, raising money for the Mayor of Dudley’s charity.

Members and partners of the Brierley Hill Regeneration Partnership have been pledging £10 on the basis that David will be left high and ‘dry’ half way down nine locks as the clock reaches the 50 minute mark. Chelsfield plc’s Robin Butler has offered to match pound for pound monies raised for the Mayor’s charity.

David will be using his usual well-drilled crew, namely his wife, Deni, daughter Tina, son-in-law Mark and two grand daughters Victoria and Hannah.

Jackie Sadek, Executive Chair of the Brierley Hill Regeneration Partnership, said:

“I’m delighted that David has risen to the challenge. I’m looking forward to being proved wrong and swelling the coffers of the Mayor’s charity with plenty of pieces of eight.

“British Waterways is an important member of the Partnership, and following the hugely successful Festival of Water and Light, I am delighted that David’s challenge puts our wonderful waterways in the limelight.”

Councillor Caunt said:

“My normal boating crew has taken up this challenge with enthusiasm and confidence. The challenge was laid down following an off-the-cuff comment about the amount of effort and time such a flight of locks would take. The challenge gives us the opportunity to ensure that others contributed to the Mayor's Charity Appeal this year.

“Once the challenge is over, we will be able to relax and enjoy ourselves as we face the next 16 locks down to Wordsley junction and onto the Stourbridge Bonded Warehouse Open Week-end, which takes place the following week-end 18th-19th October.”

The Challenge will start at 10am in the Waterfront marina where David’s boat is currently moored. From there the boat will head to the top of the nine locks flight, and the challenge will begin.

The Mayor’s charity appeal this year will support Diabetes UK and Hope – a Dudley based children’s charity.
