Family Education and Development Activities
Gornal parents will know that the pace of modern life, with competing demands in the workplace as well as at home,
is placing increasingly stressful demands on families. But did you know that right here in Gornal we
have a purpose-designed facility to provide support and personal development?
The Children and Parents Zone is a community wide resource for parents and young people.
The Centre is based at Roberts Primary School
(click here for location map) but is open to all in the local area, providing a range of activities
throughout the year around the themes of:
- Opportunities for families to learn
- Support with parenting
- Promoting play and learning for children
- A space and time for parents to chill out
Coming up soon, for example, is a Paediatric First Aid course, lasting for five weeks from
Monday 7th October 2002 between 1pm to 3pm.
This will provide you with knowledge and skills to respond in an medical
emergency if your child is injured or ill.
The Centre is also organising a Personal Development for Women course.
Its aims are to provide women with an opportunity to:
- Assess your skills
- Become more assertive
- Find out what you are capable of
- Plan the way ahead
This is an accredited course which runs over 12 weeks. A minimum of 14
students are needed for the course to run.
A creche will be provided; if you need a place for your
child please let the Centre know at the time of booking.
The Zone is also looking for parents to get involved in a community initiative.
A group of Parents is setting up a voluntary organisation to apply for funding
and develop Play activities for local children. They are hoping to set up
Holiday Play schemes for 2003. They are looking for new people to join them
and would be interested to hear from you if you would like to become involved.
You don't need any special qualifications - just enthusiasm. This would provide
you with a useful experience of planning and setting up a project as well as
the satisfaction of providing a new activity for local children and families.

Thursday 3rd October between 2-3pm at the Children and Parents Zone.
