Gornal Pubs' VIP Visit
Old Bulls Head
|
Yampy Pubs the
Jolly Crispin and
Old Bull's Head welcomed an honoured guest this afternoon
when Coseley and Gornal became part of the route of the mother of all pub crawls.
Bruce Masters of Flitwick in Bedfordshire is in the 2003 Guinness Book of Records for
Most Pubs Visited,
having visited 33,725 bars (now more than 35,000) since 1960, sampling a half or two wherever he goes.

Bruce's most prolific year was 1974 when he averaged more than eight pubs per day over the twelve months, and he certainly
kept his batting average up today by hitting around fifteen Coseley and Gornal boozers (he's hardly scratched the surface!).

Getting off the train at Coseley station Bruce started off at the Appletree, and very gradually worked
his way up to the Green Dragon at the top of Jews Lane. He must have thought he was in pub crawler's heaven as he
moved along Kent Street, sampling the ale at the Spills Meadow, Britannia, Crispin and Leopard. Unfortunately
the
'Tent was shut, as was the Crown, but Bruce was undeterred and got back into his
stride at the Waggon & Horses, Miners Arms, Fountain and Old Bull.
We understand that the last pub on Bruce's itinerary today was the Red Lion in Abbey Road which is apt as, according to
his own statistics, this is the most popular pub name in the country; he has visited more than 480 of them!
