HISTORY
Sugar Well's decline leaves a sour taste

Sugar Well
Photo Many thanks to Cassy who has sent us further details and a photo of the Sugar Well, in response to Beth's Coach Road memories article (click here).

Here is a picture taken a few months ago of what remains of the Sugar Well.

I looked long and hard for it as I knew it was there, and could not believe the state it was in. At one time people came from miles around to drink this water, it was that sweet.

I was born in the 50s and can always remember drinking it has a child , I can also remember an old man who I thought at the time must of been at least 80 going down to the Sugar Well every day to fetch water, with two tin buckets. One of the buckets was a mint green colour which I still remember to this day.

I had a word some months ago after taking this picture of the Sugar Well with one of the local councillors Mr David Stanley, and I asked him what was been done about it, as it was part of our Gornal Heritage and Gornal had been slowly destroyed since Dudley Council took over in the 1970s.

Mr Stanley informed me that Dudley Council was taking it back into Council ownership and it was Crown Property. I have no idea why it is Crown Property but I would love to know , I have also offered to help clean it up, so if anyone wants to help please get in touch with me ( cassyfranklin@blueyonder.co.uk).

Photo I have also included a picture of Ellowes Pool taken on the same day. Many a time I have swung across it on a piece of rope tied to one of the trees , and many times I have fallen in.
