pub Ian Beach of www.sedgleymanor.com has sent us this photograph of The Lion in Kent Street Upper Gornal. The Lion was next to another lost pub, The Royal Oak, and Ian has spotted something on the photo that helps to further pin down its exact location:

I noticed the unusual roof on the building next door - top right hand corner of the photo. It seemed to ring a bell somewhere deep in the old memory - have a look at the roof on the attached photo of Kent Street's Wesley Church (Wesleyen Chapel).

The Lion picture was kindly supplied to Ian by Lynn Suvanto of Ontario in Canada, who writes:

The woman in the picture is Ada Eliza CARTWRIGHT (nee Colbourne) and her youngest brother Jim Colbourne. The other woman in the photo is Leah Rowlinson who was a maid. She later committed suicide because she became pregnant and couldn't face the social discrase. The photo date is approx. 1911.

Ada Eliza ran the pub with husband William Cartwright (1858-1916). William was the son of Joshua Cartwright who became licensee of the White Chimneys. Lynn has forwarded us a 1930 photo of the pub that we will be publishing shortly.

Lynn is keen to communicate with anyone interested in the photo, especially if they are researching surnames Cartwright, Round, Naylor, or Parkes. Email her at lynnsuvanto@hotmail.com

Please help to fill this page with your memories of the pub, its licensees, and its regulars. Email us at admin@yampy.co.uk.
