The Fountain, 1920's - Names Start to Emerge

Fountain Further to our recent article about the photo kindly provided by Clive Holmwood, showing his Great-Great-Grandfather JACK HASSALL (with bicycle) and friends, posing outside Gornal's Fountain pub, we are grateful to Jim Williamson and his father-in-law, who have identified some of the people in the photograph.

Fourth from the left is LEN HICKMAN. Next to him - fifth from the left and fifth from the right - is GEORGIE CARLA. Apparently 'Carla' was a nickname - does any reader know Georgie's real name? He is thought to have been a cobbler in a shoe shop at the bottom of Robert Street, probably at its junction with Ruiton Street.

Sitting centre is licensee TOM GRIFFITHS, probably with his daughter IDA standing in front of him. Ida also ran the Fountain for many years, with husband Fred.

Sitting far right. is JAMES HENRY BRADLEY

If you know of other faces in the photograph, or have more details about the people named above, please get in touch with us. Also, we are still trying to find out the exact date of the photo - it is said to be 1925, but we feel that it may be a little earlier. Do any clues arise from the names mentioned above? For example, Tom Griffiths would have been 55 in 1925, does this square with his appearance and his daughter's size? A firmer date would help us to identify which of James Henry Bradley's children is pictured.

And of course, if you have similar images to share, we would be delighted to hear from you. Contact us at admin@yampy.co.uk
