Photo We have our friend Arthur Hale to thank once again for this photograph, and surely almost everyone in Gornal, or their dad, grandad, or uncle, appears on it somewhere.

The Alfred Allen works were situated at both ends of Deepdale Lane and were known as Top Shop and Bottom Shop respectively. This picture dates back to the start of the Second World War, and we presume therefore that some of the incredibly young looking boys on the photo would be doing men's work.

Arthur has provided plenty of names of people pictured here, but there are too many faces, and too many gaps for us to accurately identify each person's position in the frame, so if you see a name that interests you email us and we will ask Arthur to tell us exactly where that person is. Similarly, if you can provide any further names for us, please give a little more information than "7th from the left" so that we know for certain which person you mean.

Sitting at the front Arthur recognises his brother Walter Hale, H. Davies, G. Bradley, A. Watton and D. Morris.

Amongst the group seated behind them are Eli Whitehouse, S. Jones, B.Brookes, J. Crook, B. Marson, H. Davies (another one?).

Further back is Ike Hughes, B. Cooper, W. Winwood, A. Ball, Fryer (initial unknown), A. Box.

Standing at the back H. Flavell (there had to be a Flavell!), J. Marsh (there had to be a Marsh too!), S. Driscoe (or Briscoe), D. Follows (Fellows?).

We would be very grateful for any information about those pictured, or indeed the rise and fall of Alfred Allen, as there does not seem to be any record at all of this once important firm on the internet.
