Shymalan Directs - Always a Good Sign
Anybody who loves stories of alien invasion and little green men will not be disappointed by this spine-tingling
offering by director M Night Shyamalan.
But 'Signs' is not merely another run-of-the-mill science-fiction film. It also examines the concept of faith and
the family. It is based on the idea that crop circles are more than just a hoax, that they are something much
more sinister.
Mel Gibson is the star of the film and he puts in a sleek performance as Graham Hess, priest-turned-farmer trying to bring
up his two children with the help of his brother. He renounces his vocation after losing his faith in God when his wife
gets killed in a car crash. The suspense starts to build up when several crop circles mysteriously appear in his fields,
and it carries on right through the film. It is nail-biting material, and the decision to show the alien rather than
leave it to our imagination is an indication of a bold director.
The two children in the film put in very creditable performances and Rory Culkin (brother of Macaulay) is certain to become
a star.
The ending of the film sees all faith restored and leaves you with a feeling of hope for the future. It also leaves you
with a compelling need to inspect the skies now and again.
