Green Dyed Monster
Watching this latest superhero offering you would find it hard to believe that it took a staggering 2.5
million hours of computer design to perfect the creature. All that investment and technical effort, and yet
cartoon images of the jolly green giant running through fields of sweetcorn still popped up in my mind.
The film is based on the same comic book character as the 1970's series, 'The Incredible Hulk'.
It opens with geneticist David Banner experimenting on his own DNA and then inadvertently passing down his messed-up
genetic make-up to his son Bruce, played by Eric Bana.
Bruce is brought up by foster parents, as his own parents are supposedly killed.
As an adult he is working as a scientist with his girlfriend Betty (Jennifer Connelly), when he is involved in a
nuclear accident. The effects of this accident on Bruce are that whenever he gets angry....well, you know the rest!
Josh Lucas plays a convincing baddie who wants to use the Hulk for his own selfish needs and Nick Nolte puts in a believable
performance as Bruce's scheming father who suddenly turns up again behaving in a way a loving father should not behave.
The first hour of this run-of-the-mill action movie is very slow and the storyline leaves a lot to be desired.
The split-screen effect is quite off-putting and does not add anything to the film.
A nice little touch, though, is that Lou Ferrigno, the muscle-man who played the actual hulk in the 1970's series,
makes a brief appearance as a security man.
Now, I don't have too much trouble in believing that a mad scientist who has had his DNA altered can change into a
large green monster when someone makes him angry, but the one thing about this film that made it completely unbelievable
for me is that although the rest of Bruce's clothes fall off him when he changes into his alter-ego,
his trousers stay firmly on! They must be made from commendably stretchy Lycra - but how can you be truly in awe of a
Lycra clad jolly green giant?
